Walter Campbell was born in Teaneck on 1/29/1946 to
Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell. He was one of six children. He lived in Teaneck all of his life. Walter left high school when he was a sophomore in May of 1963 to work for a local landscaper.
He joined the Marines immediately after his 18th birthday. When he enlisted, he planned on making the Marines his career. He had wanted to be a Marine since he was 12.
Walter achieved the rank of Private. He served with the
3rd Battalion of the 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Private Campbell was killed on 10/26/64 in a helicopter collision in Huelva, Spain in which nine Marines died during amphibious landing exercises. He had visited home approximately a month before he was killed and told his family how much he enjoyed being a Marine.
This valiant Marine is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Hackensack, NJ.
